I had the pleasure to meet actor Michael Crawford, photographed for Sunday Life Magazine. I remember crying with laughter as a kid when I watched him in Some Mother’s do ‘Ave ‘Em years ago - ooops, showing my age a bit there…
We photographed him with a dish and a bit of side light at the Loft in Darling Harbour (he was in Sydney to promote a new Album of his music). Anything more elaborate would have just not been right…
Apparently he lives in NZ now having resettled whilst recovering from ME, brought on by his stint as Count Fosco in the Woman in White in London in which he wore a rubber fat suit - 4 hours sweating buckets in that thing would finish most people off and after appearing for a few months, Michael could go no further. I remember being sent by the Daily Mail to cover the show’s previews - there was huge interest.
I was recently commissioned by Home Beautiful to shoot their “Simple Things” feature highlighting simplicity as a feature of successful interior styling and design.

The shoot involved 5 room sets and 8 or so product close ups all shot with natural light to bring out the soft loveliness of the featured product

Anyone for brunch? The job was styled by the lovely and talented Stephanie Powell, and she made the work so effortlessly beautiful…what these pictures don’t show the sheer amount of work involved in getting the items ready behind the scenes

The location was a house in Mosman owned by an interior designer. It was a fantastic place already but then our lorry-load of product arrived: we stripped it all out and replaced it…well, most of it…

This shot with the glass posed a problem: the glass looked messy with just natural light reflections so we employed a soft-box to the side but put strips of gaffer on it so the highlights on the glass resembled a Victorian window’s - still nice and natural looking though

…and some more product which was another page in the mag. Again all natural light against some antique doors. All in all, a nice shoot!
…no not Mel again but rather some nice pictures shot on the back of a TVC for Freedom Furniture at a location in Sydney…

Always tricky shooting on what is a filmset. Photographers are a long way down the food-chain and you have to do everything in just a few minutes…

which is tricky sometimes - contrary to appearances, I don’t think these two models got on very well…still, we managed to coax a little love as you can see!
Incidentally, I used the new Phase One IQ160 for this shoot to give the clients, M&C Saatchi, an option to run the campaign outdoor. It’s a lovely camera to use and produces stunning results. The touch screen works really well and its all very logical as you’d expect from Scandaniva. We did, however, run into problems with tethering and Live-view. My assistant Ann Ouchterloney was fantastically cool-headed on the day and managed a work-around pretty quickly - thanks.
The weird thing about this shoot was that there were THREE “Graham”s working on it. Very strange and VERY distracting when you are one of them…”Graham, over here, Graham… Graham’s got it, go ask Graham…well you get the picture…
I was asked by P & O Cruises UK to shoot some Sydney images onboard the Aurora for their marketing materials. Sydney is one of the highlights on their world cruise programme, so tell me, Dear Lord, why did it rain??!
It was a one day deal - the ship was in town for one day only - so we had to make the best of it.
It was actually raining at this moment. We pumped in a wink of flash to simulate late sun and processed the image very warm.

We cast Jeff and Rachel (from Wink) as the role of our happy punters and they were bang-on. They were actually married which definitely helped to keep it coming on the day and one of the reasons we chose them

here’s the only 5 mins of sunlight we had! But what light!! Paul McMahon, my assistant, quickly got a gelled flash going so we could match the lighting on the models to the Royal Opera House - these guys were in deep shadow.
The result was one happy client and maybe more cruising in future…
Thanks also to David Novak Piper who did a sterling job.
I was asked by AusPost to shoot two legendary Australian Sport figures for their “Legends” series. Not something that happens everyday having a stamp to your name so I was happy to oblige. Both Joe Marston and David Campese made great subjects and their ease in front of the camera made the job easy - thanks guys.
We shot his in Joe’s garage at his home in the Central Coast next to his “Wall of Fame”

…and David was in the middle of packing for his big move to South Africa but we managed to find a nice ironed shirt…
